This opal was purchased directly from the Skye Mine in Australia in 1973. The necklace comes with a certificate of authenticity and a booklet from the mine with pictures of the original uncut stone and a full history of its discovery written by Dr. L. E. Koch.The total carat weight on the opal is 11.67 carats, and it’s surrounded by 26 round-cut diamonds with a total weight of 1.81 carats in a 14k white gold setting. The opal has excellent fire, primarily in shades of blue and green, and is polished both front and back. This is a single-cut solid opal, it hasn’t been bonded with anything else.A unique quality of Andamookan opals is that they’re harder than normal opals, coming in at 6.5-7 on the hardness scale. This stone will never crack or break, and is a ‘crystal quality’ (gem quality) opal.This piece has been appraised at $12,400 by an accredited senior gemologist.
